Case Study
Tommaso Casini Middle School

The Municipality of Valsamoggia commissioned Idroelettrica to restore and upgrade the pumping station serving Tommaso Casini Middle School to meet current standards. The intervention aimed to ensure safety, reliability, and ease of maintenance for a building with a simultaneous occupancy of 301 to 500 people, classified as a Type 2 school (Ministerial Decree 26/8/1992) and Type 1 risk according to UNI 10779.

Client requirements

It was necessary to restore the efficiency of the existing pumping unit, bringing it into compliance with current regulations and implementing improvements to make routine maintenance operations simpler and safer. The critical situation included:
  • a pumping unit compliant with UNI 9490, but installed in an underground room below ground level;
  • access to the room possible only via a ship’s ladder under a solid metal cover;
  • a water reserve consisting of a 30,000 L tank with replenishment from the municipal network, ensuring approximately 1 hour of autonomy.

Idroelettrica's proposal

To resolve accessibility issues and equipment deterioration, Idroelettrica proposed the installation of a FIREBOX type prefabricated pump room above ground. Key elements of the proposal:
  • Use of the existing water reserve (underground concrete tanks) to contain costs and reduce operational impact.
  • Installation of the FIREBOX module above ground to eliminate the risk of flooding and make the room easily accessible for maintenance and periodic inspections.
  • Connection of the unit to the existing distribution network on the ground floor, with vertical branches to the UNI 25 fire hose reels located on the various floors.
  • Design and sizing carried out according to best engineering practices, with the aim of keeping the system independent from the drinking water network.
  • Selection of solutions that facilitate routine maintenance and reduce future operating costs.

The Result

Thanks to the collaboration between the technical offices of the Municipality of Valsamoggia and Idroelettrica SpA, it was possible to salvage part of the pre-existing system, containing costs and bringing the pumping station into compliance with current regulations. The adopted solution now guarantees accessibility, ease of maintenance, operational continuity, and increased safety for the school complex.
