Case Study
RSA Tiziano

The Tiziano Nursing Home is a 120-bed facility with an Integrated Day Center, covering approximately 2,400 m² and spread over three floors, nestled in a green space designed to promote the well-being of its residents. In a setting that cares for vulnerable individuals, fire protection is an essential requirement: a modern, reliable system designed to support rapid and safe emergency response is needed.

Client requirements

Given the complexity and size of the building, it was necessary to implement an advanced fire protection system capable of:
  • ensure adequate hydraulic performance for the flood protection system;
  • increase the reliability of the water supply by reducing the typical problems associated with inlet and priming;
  • to promote safety and facilitate evacuation in an emergency, while minimizing response times;
  • Use a configuration that is consistent with the presence of an underground water reserve and with the maintenance requirements of a healthcare facility.

Idroelettrica's proposal

Idroelettrica SpA, in collaboration with the design firm, proposed fire-fighting pump-sets compliant with UNI EN 12845, featuring Vertical Turbine Pumps (VTP) as vertical service pumps. The solution adopted is based on the VERTICALFIRE systems, which consist of submersible vertical axial-flow pumps as required by UNI EN 12845 (see Section 10.6.1).Configuration and Key Points:
  • hydraulic diagram showing an underground storage tank and a pump room located directly above the tank;
  • main pumps are always operated below the suction line, a condition that eliminates priming problems and improves service continuity;
  • greater accessibility to the components of the pressurization system for inspection and maintenance;
  • A solution designed to ensure the required performance and maximum reliability, which is particularly important in healthcare facilities.

The Result

The adoption of VTP systems (vertical-axis submersible pumps) has brought tangible benefits to the Tiziano Nursing Home:
  • greater reliability of the fire suppression system and improved overall efficiency;
  • perfect compatibility with underground water reservoirs, reducing inlet issues;
  • elimination of the luring issues typical of traditional solutions;
  • A solid infrastructure to ensure safety and operational continuity in a facility that houses vulnerable individuals.
