The expansion of the Manitou Italia plant, located in the Cavazzona district of Castelfranco Emilia (on the border with the province of Bologna), involved the construction of a new production building covering over 4,000 m², adjacent to the existing facility. To ensure operational continuity and the safety of people and property, the project required a comprehensive fire protection system capable of covering the entire complex, including both the new plant and the historic facility.

Client requirements

The main requirement was:
  • protect the new facility (over 4,000 m²) and the existing building with a single, properly sized fire protection system;
  • comply with current regulations governing fire hydrant systems (UNI EN 12845 and UNI 10779);
  • ensure reliability and continuity of power supply through a redundant configuration;
  • to adopt a pre-assembled solution that would reduce installation time and simplify maintenance and inspections.

Idroelettrica's proposal

In collaboration with the client’s design firm, Idroelettrica proposed a FIREBOX water treatment plant equipped with a fire suppression pressurization system compliant with UNI EN 12845 and UNI 10779, featuring:
  • VTP (Vertical Turbine Pumps) main pumps;
  • submersible Jockey Pump for pressure maintenance;
  • a system that is fully assembled, both electrically and hydraulically;
  • under-flow configuration, for maximum reliability and to eliminate any issues related to inlet/priming;
  • an “enhanced” solution designed to serve both the new building and the historic headquarters.

The Result

The installation of the upgraded FIREBOX VTP has made it possible to extend fire protection coverage to the new facility and the existing building, ensuring adequate protection for the entire complex. The customer has gained greater assurance of safety for the facility and its staff, with a system that complies with rules and is designed for reliability and long-term durability.
