Case Study
SDR-PACK S.p.A.

With the arrival of the third generation and expected growth in the coming years, SDR-PACK S.p.A. has invested in the construction of its new facility. Safety and sustainability are core values of both the project and production; for this reason, fire protection was integrated from the very early stages of the new facility’s design, with the goal of ensuring the safety of people and property, as well as production continuity.

Client requirements

In a packaging manufacturing facility, the materials present can contribute to the rapid spread of fire. It was therefore necessary to implement fire protection measures capable of:
  • provide adequate services that comply with rules throughout the entire building;
  • install a fire hydrant network and a foam fire suppression system, which is more effective against rapidly spreading fires;
  • ensure the reliability and proper activation of the dispensers in the field;
  • to provide a comprehensive solution, tailored to the level of risk and designed to ensure clear maintenance management over time.

Idroelettrica's proposal

Idroelettrica designed and supplied a solution that combines water supply and foam control, in collaboration with the designer. Key points:
  • Water supply system for a fire hydrant network, designed to provide full coverage of the facility.
  • Pressurization units for foam systems, capable of:
    • Mix the water with the foaming agent using a premixer;
    • properly activate the nozzles, allowing the foam to flow onto the burning surfaces;
    • to ensure the combined fire-extinguishing effect of smothering (separation from air) and cooling (the action of water as it changes states).
  • Integration of the tank and pumps to ensure that the fire-fighting water supply is capable of supporting the operation until the fire is completely extinguished, in accordance with the design requirements.

The Result

In consultation with the designer, a comprehensive solution was developed consisting of:
  • Fire suppression pump-set compliant with UNI EN 12845 and UNI 10779 for foam systems;
  • A pressurization system dedicated to the fire hydrant network for comprehensive protection of the building.
The client obtained a fire protection system tailored to the typical risks of the packaging industry, integrated into the new facility, and meeting safety and business continuity client requirements, to their full satisfaction.
