Case Study
Marconi Express, Inc.

The Marconi Express is a rapid transit system connecting the airport to the city of Bologna (People Mover), designed for efficiency, sustainability, and adaptive service frequency. The entire route is equipped with safety walkways and emergency stations; the Lazzaretto Station, located halfway along the route, required a dedicated fire protection system to safeguard the escalators and emergency exits.

Client requirements

It was necessary to provide a fire-fighting pump station capable of ensuring a constant flow rate and pressure to supply the hydrants and systems at the Lazzaretto Station, with the following main requirements:
  • compliance with the UNI EN 12845 and UNI 10779 rules;
  • reliability and operational redundancy to ensure service continuity;
  • ease of integration with the equipment room provided by the customer;
  • Historical and diagnostic tracking of operating data for maintenance and verification.

Idroelettrica's proposal

Idroelettrica supplied an EUROFIRE series pressurization unit (prefabricated, modular units that can be coupled together) manufactured in accordance with the machinery directive 2006/42/EC and compliant with UNI EN 12845/UNI 10779. Main features of the supply:
  • EUROFIRE modular system consisting of standalone modules mounted on a base made of metal profiles;
  • Complete equipment: safety guard, valves, outlet manifold designed for connection to additional modules, electrical panels, and automatic controls;
  • In-house production at the Idroelettrica plant in accordance with quality standards and European directives;
  • Integration of the EPRO control unit (UNI EN 12845 standard) with a BLACKBOX function for chronological recording of machine operating data and simplified diagnostics;
  • Designed for installation in the equipment room built by the customer, to serve the escalator at Lazzaretto Station.

The Result

The EUROFIRE pump-sets were installed in the equipment room at the Lazzaretto station and provided compliant, reliable, and easily maintainable fire protection. The EPRO control unit enabled historical event logging (BLACKBOX function), simplifying maintenance and fault analysis. The project met the customer’s safety requirements, ensuring operational continuity and performance traceability.
